Press Release

Barcelona, February 25th, 2019

During the Mobile World Congress 2019 (Hall 5 Stand 5B41), Nexedi will showcase its next generation Network Management System (SlapOS NMS) designed for managing low latency 5G and 4G networks. SlapOS NMS is published under Free Software license and can be run on multiple 4G/5G stacks making it possible to deploy a full featured commercial telecommunication network that relies entirely on open source software and open hardware. SlapOS NMS supports the provisioning of edge computing value-added services such as Content Delivery Network (CDN), artificial intelligence (A.I.) offloading for autonomous cars or IoT buffering gateways for industrial automation.

SlapOS NMS is the first Network Management System (NMS) for 4G/5G radio networks licensed as Free Software. Applications include: private mobile radio (PMR), low latency Industry 4.0 campus, management of commercial mobile telecommunications, research on distributed core networks, etc.

Its converged architecture consistently integrates provisioning, orchestration and billing of both software defined radio (SDR), edge computing and IoT. Step-by-step documentation and learning track teaches how to deploy in just a few hours a full featured 4G/5G telecommunication network.

Jean-Paul Smets, CEO of Nexedi, explains: "Ten years ago, Nexedi invented SlapOS, one of the first systems for distributed cloud computing, also known as Edge Computing. SlapOS was extended in 2017 into a Network Management System (SlapOS NMS) which supports the orchestration of Amarisoft LTE / NR virtual radio access network (VRAN) and Open Compute Project open hardware. SlapOS relies on re6st and babel protocols to optimise latency on a hybrid wired and wireless mesh network that acts as a resilient IPv6 backhaul."

Rafael Monnerat, COO of VIFIB, adds: "Nexedi added in 2019 support for SRS LTE Open Source SDR and Lime Microsystems open hardware. SlapOS NMS is now a truly multistack solution that can power fully open source software and open hardware eNodeB / gNodeB setting a new standard for cost, security, flexibility, auditing and vendor independence. It supports subscriber management, accounting, monitoring, billing, issue tracking, inventory management and provisioning of value-added services at the edge."

Jean-Paul Smets concludes: "We hope to extend SlapOS NMS in the coming months to support more software stacks and more hardware, including ASIC based eNodeB and interoperable evolved packet core (EPC). We also hope that an open source NR physical emulation stack will emerge from the community. Sadly, many companies in the Software Defined Radio (SDR) business are reproducing outdated vendor lock-in schemes typical of traditional telecommunication vendors. Only Free Software and Open Hardware can lead to a global, long term, sustainable and profitable alternative to Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson."

About SlapOS

Created in 2009, SlapOS is the only Open Source / Free Software solution for edge computing that has been deployed commercially and successfully. Based on a Hyperconverged Orchestration System (HyOS) that consistently integrates provisioning, devops, accounting, billing, monitoring, orchestration and automated disaster recovery, SlapOS can be used to implement in a few days or weeks public clouds, distributed mesh clouds, big data clouds, hyperconverged infrastructures, IoT appstores, 4G/5G networks or edge computing. SlapOS technology is at the core of Teralab, a big data platform that was awarded by the Big Data Value Association and used by dozens of multinational corporations. SlapOS has been deployed together with ERP5 at Airbus, Mitsubishi, PSA, Aide et Action, Capago, etc.

VIFIB, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexedi, markets edge cloud computing services based on SlapOS.
